I can still see your shadow walking: a tribute to Thea St. Omer

April 7th, 2015 Yesterday a friend informed me that a classmate of mine at NYU, Thea Saint Omer was found dead in her shop in Syracuse. It is a blunt fact. It is awful news. It has affected me deeply, for although I did not know Thea that well, I believe that everyone we meet has the potential to throw their weight into how we view the world. Thea did this for me with a single image. It was 17 or so years ago that I went to film school in New York. Thea was among many classmates. I did not know Thea that well. The odd conversation in the hall, the observations made in showing each other's work. That especially film school trait of sometimes giving commentary that is much about proving one's own intelligence as helping one's classmate with honest criticism. I must admit I was guilty of some pretty snarky comments in my time at NYU. Film school can be a strange laboratory where kind words are spoken, but it can be rough to show your work to peers. My Fabulous Visit To The Bibliotheque/Discotheque

Paris -- It has been on my mind for while now. A building that I first thought was a misprint, or at the very worst a joke at public tax payer's expense, but as it turned out, through further exploration to be as real as the hand in front of my face.... Yes, in Paris' strange but loveable fifteenth arrondisement, home to old ladies with poodles, Korean restaurants and retail shopping, on the banks of the Seine where sixties architecture runs a little too rampant for my taste, lies a mystical place that has combined the sexy, sultry sounds of Diana Ross with a helpful and streamline modern lending library serving the public need. Yes and that place is.... The BIBLIOTHEQUE/DISCOTHEQUE.... At first I played the skeptic. What could possibly be gained by combining a public library with a discoteque. Shrink myself to dine (A poem about bistro dining in Paris) There really is a lot of unused space in this bistro Plenty of room for everyone Over there is an empty table They are saving it for the hypothetical Why is this guy’s ass in my face? Why do we have to be elbow to elbow? knee to balls? Smoke in my nostrils, in my mouth, I am not smoking I should start. Get some of the benefits There really are too many human bodies at this table Totally unnecessary No one seems as big and as cumbersomely misplaced as me Everyone else are pint sized munchkins grown expressly for the Parisian scene Feel like a gerbil in a gerbil slaughter factory No one else seems to mind “No! Please! Don’t add another chair to this table!” For the love of God That guy found a new place setting at our table I thought it couldn't be done He found a way He carved out a new piece of social real estate out of nothing My sleeve in your dinner Close enough to kiss with none of the impulse
