French songwriting is all about "not singing". If you can "not sing", but speak or whisper a lot of lyrics as if you're going for condensed novel writing with musical accompaniment, you are doing something right. Do not carry a tune. The tune is perfectly capable of walking by itself, often times in the opposite direction.
